GNOME – is not just a window manager. These interfaces are known as integrated graphical environment.  The composition of the shell is a lot of applications, some of which are intended to adjust the operating system as a whole.

Some of the popular application in gnome :

• Nautilus – a graphical file manager that works in several modes;
• GNOME Terminal - terminal emulator that provides the user access to console commands;
• Gedit – text editor with support for encoding Unicode;
• Evolution – advanced e-mail client, close to the functionality of MS Outlook;
• Totem – media player.
